Ugo A. Perego, PhD
I started this website with the objective of gathering in a single place papers, articles, and additional material that I have been involved in researching, writing, or compiling. It is meant as a repository of things I have done in my life, comparable to an ever-changing curriculum vitae. I am also keeping a blog (which I am not updating very often) to discuss current issues that pertain to my work or person.
ABOUT ME
I was born in Milan, Italy and moved to the States when I was 21. I received a BS (2000) and a MS (2001) degree from Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah) in Health Sciences together with a minor in Business Management and a graduate minor in Ancient Scriptures. I have also a PhD (2010) in Genetics and Biomolecular Sciences from the University of Pavia (Pavia, Italy).
I worked as a senior researcher for the non-profit Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation from 1999 to 2012 and done some part-time teaching at the college level (Brigham Young University in Provo and Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City). Currently, I am the Coordinator for the Seminary and Institute program for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Central Italy and Malta. Because of this new employment opportunity, I have relocated in 2012 with my family to the beautiful and historical city of Rome. I have been able to keep my academic research affiliation with the University of Pavia and I continue to work on research projects with collaborators from the universities of Utah, Illinois, Perugia, Rome, Florence, and BYU. In addition to my full-time job with the Church Educational System, I am the Director of the Rome Institute Campus for Religion, the chair for the BYU-I Pathway program for the Rome site, a visiting scientist at the University of Pavia, and a volunteer for FairMormon, Book of Mormon Central, and The Interpreter Foundation. A full list of my scientific papers is available on this website or here. I am also the owner of the Genetic Genealogy Consultant, a service geared toward individuals interested in personal genomics for ancestry, genealogy, forensic, paternity, and legal purposes.
My personal interests are reflected by the type of projects I have been involved with and that I am sharing on this website, namely DNA applications to the study of population migrations and genetics, molecular genealogy and ancestry, and history, particularly Mormon history. My greatest objective in life is trying to be the husband my wife deserve to have and a loving and caring father for the five children I have been blessed to have.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions you would like to ask. I am also available for lectures or firesides on a number of scientific and religious topics.
The name for this website is based on my very first DNA project in 2003, when I started working on the Utah Smith family and successfully reconstructed a genetic signature for Mormonism's founder Joseph Smith Jr.
